Houghton Lodge Gardens celebrated a truly bountiful Apple Day on Sunday 29th September. The gardens were abuzz with activity as visitors of all ages enjoyed a day filled with apple-themed fun, education, and entertainment.
The dedicated team of gardeners at Houghton Lodge ensured the grounds were pristine, creating a beautiful backdrop for the day’s festivities. Storyteller Michael O’Leary captivated audiences young and old with his enchanting tales, while children embarked on a magical quest to find the golden ‘wish apple’. Families gathered to participate in a traditional wassail ceremony with music and chants, to ensure a fruitful harvest in the coming year.
The Glass House Tearoom delighted visitors with its apple-inspired menu, while Sparsholt College offered a unique opportunity to taste and purchase rare apple varieties. The college’s “apple academics”, Chris, Neil, David, Liz, Mary, and Fee were also on hand to identify apples brought in by visitors from their gardens, sharing their knowledge and expertise.
The Red Stags Morris dancers added a splash of color and energy to the event with their lively performances. Visitors also had the chance to take home bags of windfall apples collected from the gardens’ many apple trees.
“Apple Day was a wonderful event,” said Sophie Busk, owner of Houghton Lodge Gardens. “We were thrilled to see so many people enjoying the beautiful surroundings, engaging with the activities, and celebrating the apple harvest.”

The event truly showcased the beauty and bounty of the apple harvest, leaving visitors with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for this iconic fruit.
