Houghton Lodge Gardens has a wonderful variety of photogenic areas – including the house and river view, the river, the beautiful gardens (including the topiary garden, the long border and the walled garden), the chalk cob wall, the pond, bridges, woodland walk, the fields, water meadows and alpacas.
Houghton Lodge’s proximity to London (1.5 hrs), Southampton (40 mins), Andover (20 mins), Winchester (20 mins) and Salisbury (30 mins) means that it is ideally suited to filming as well as commercial photography. We can supply electricity cables, loos, and a comfortable teahouse with delicious snacks and homemade cakes for a hungry cast and crew! We are only 5 minutes drive from our local town Stockbridge-which is abundant with cafes, pubs and local shops.
Film & TV Location
Houghton Lodge Gardens have been used as the location for some wonderful television dramas, films and documentaries. It is particularly popular with film makers, because there are no power lines or any other 21st century features in view from the house.
Most recently the River at Houghton was used by Sir David Attenborough to record his documentary ‘Triumph of the Vertebrates’ where he explained the significance of Lampreys in the evolution of animals. It has also featured in the BBC’s adaptation of David Copperfield with Dame Maggie Smith, Trevor Eve, Zoe Wanamaker, and Daniel Radcliffe, the film ‘Wilde’ with Stephen Fry as Oscar Wilde and and Jude Law as Lord Alfred Douglas, Agatha Christie’s ‘Miss Marple-Murder at the Vicarage’ with Paul Eddington and Joan Hickson and The wonderful costume drama of Edith Wharton’s book ‘The Buccaneers.’ (the pier by the river was built especially for this production and it has been such a success that we have never taken it down!)
