The perfect day

“Thank you for giving us the opportunity to us host our wedding at Houghton Lodge. It was honestly the most perfect day and much of this is down to the venue; I couldn’t have pictured it in a better setting and never would have imagined having an outdoor wedding. All our guest fell in love with your home.” – Diana and Hugo (27th August 2017).

We cannot not ask for a more beautiful setting to say our vows and could not ask for a more honest and welcoming host.

“On the day we visted Houghton Lodge Gardens and met Sophie we knew immediately this was the place. The scenery fitted our expectations of an quaint country home with romantic seasonal flowers growing everywhere you turn. The garden and grounds is impeccably looked after. The flowers and plants bloomed with pride, a true reflection on Sophie’s love and respect for nature. The garden is not over designed and over manicured it looked organic and yet well thought-out transporting you to a scented summery meadow. Cleverly structured to have secluded areas away from the noise and guests for personal photos.

The Chinese room is a good size for 50 guests ample room and distance for the aisle. All beautifully positioned in front of french windows overlooking the open green grounds leading to the river.

Bridal suite was a good size to get change, all facilities very clean and good condition. There are no modern conveniences like a TV, air conditioning or electric shower but all that will look out of character of the antiquey home Sophie preserved. Houghton Lodge is everything you would expect out of a country farm house. It possesses a classic rustic style would easy compete with any boutique hotel I have been to.

Sophie’s charismatic charm and easy going personality made deciding very easy for us. She was very accommodating and patient with us, quick responses on emails and phone calls a real pleasure to work with. She treated us with respect and professionalism.

We cannot not ask for a more beautiful setting to say our vows and could not ask for a more honest and welcoming host. Sophie and her beautiful home gave us the intimate wedding we wanted. The guests appreciated the floral beauty and quiet serenity versus a city reception.

We will have these happy memories for the rest of our lives and will visit one day for an anniversary to reminiscence the most beautiful day we have ever witnessed.

Our deep appreciation goes out to Sophie, her team and Houghton Lodge Gardens. It deserves more recognition. A true hidden gem in Hampshire.”

The perfect experience in stunning surroundings

“As soon as we saw Houghton we knew we had to spend the most important day of our lives there. The location is as beautiful … no, more beautiful … than any wedding we’ve ever be to. At the Lodge we found a hidden idyll: a quintessentially English corner of Hampshire, yet free from the starched formality that would have given the day a very different feel. Sophie could not have been friendlier or done more to help: if she started out as owner and hostess of Houghton, by the end we considered her a friend who was fully invested in our big day. All ideas and requests were considered and every effort made to accommodate our (at times outlandish) requests. The day itself was incredible – a good number of our friends and family said this was the best wedding they’d ever been to – in large part thanks to the surroundings – and none could remember an entrance like ours … rowing up the River Test. It is also a testament to Sophie and the team that organising the wedding was so enjoyable. I always tell people getting married that they should enjoy the months leading up to the big day. Our visits to Lodge and the charming village of Houghton played a big part in that pleasure. Even now, the mere mention of “Houghton” raises a smile on both our faces. I’m sure you will enjoy it as much as we did!” – Clara and Ben Harding.

“After many years looking for the perfect location to get married Houghton Lodge for filled every requirement and more! The choice within the grounds (Walled Garden, Main Grounds, Conservatory) is unquestionably the best! (Fantastic for children) Sophie and her team were ‘exceptional’ in every detail which ensured a perfect, hassle free wedding day! (Absolutely nothing is too much trouble!) To have somewhere as beautiful and welcoming as this cannot be found anywhere else. I genuinely would always ‘highly’ recommend Houghton Lodge to anyone if your looking for that ‘perfect’ day! (Worth every single penny!!!)” – James & Nadine Coombes.

The Most Beautiful Wedding Location

“Our dreams came true on our first visit to Houghton and that was on a dreary day in November but we fell instantly in love with the place. Our wedding on September 12th 2015 went completely perfectly. We held our drinks reception up in the wall garden which is absolutely stunning with all sorts of different plants/flowers/vegetables, our guests were able to roam around while it provided a perfect back drop for my husband and I to have photos. We then held our wedding breakfast for 120 in a large marquee down on the lawn next to the river, with swans gliding past it really was a perfect and picturesque setting. We put coloured lights in the trees which lit up the lawn and had the house lit up in the background, we couldn’t fault it. Sophie is so wonderful to work with and accommodated all our plans and desires. It is a unique location and one we would recommend wholeheartedly.” – Chris and Amy Brake.

Fantastic, magical romantic wedding venue

“We wanted somewhere relaxed, naturally beautiful and romantic to get married. Houghton Lodge is breathtakingly beautiful right as it’s right on the Test river and we had the most amazing fantastic day. The Busk Family (owners of Houghton Lodge) were so accommodating, flexible and supportive of our wedding plans which was a big plus. We got married in 2014, the year of torrential rain, and I mean torrential. I was so worried from Jan-April that the venue would be flooded but it’s surprisingly resilient and didn’t flood at all! It wasn’t boggy or slushy, I still wore my heels and long white dress, the sun shone and it was a glorious day. As well as the obvious attraction which is the river, the grounds of the lodge are beautiful and the house provides a gorgeous backdrop for pictures. Whilst marquee venues are undoubtedly the more expensive option, this venue is so unique, so romantic, if you can afford it, Id highly recommend it. I had seen Houghton Lodge several years before getting married and like most girls who dream of their big day, I always thought it would be the dream wedding venue. When I was lucky enough to getting married here, it didn’t disappoint- my dream came true and I had the best day of my life.” – Emily & Richard Chegwidden.

Houghton Lodge Wonderful Wedding Venue

“We held our wedding at Houghton Lodge in the summer. It was wonderful. The venue was stunning and Sophie made sure that the day was perfect. We were married in the music room which was an elegant, intimate space. We then relaxed in the walled gardens and have some amazing informal photos because of the natural beauty of the gardens. Sophie gave excellent recommendations for marquees and catering and even let us fish on the river. McCrimmon & Reid were incredible, the ‘posh barbeque’ and fly fishing lessons were inspired! We can’t thank Sophie enough for her unfailing support and ideas that made our day so memorable.” – Nicola Adie.

May 2014 Wedding

“Houghton Lodge is a truly magical place and Sophie and the Busk family are extremely welcoming – I wouldn’t have had our wedding anywhere else. We held our drinks reception in the walled garden which was so beautifully prepared and we have some stunning photos with the gardens as a backdrop- particularly the lavender beds. We then led our guests down through the peacock garden and up a small mount by the house where you could just start to see the tops of our tipi’s which we had kept a secret up until that point. We walked down our matted walkway towards the tipis that were placed next to the river- it really was magical. The river setting is terribly romantic and we have some stunning photos of people chatting next to the river as the sun started to set. There is plenty of accommodation locally and I couldn’t recommend the venue more highly. Houghton is a real treasure and not a venue that churns out weddings every day so it will be truly special to both you as a couple and to the guests who are not likely to have been there before.” – Amelia Locke.

Beautiful Summer Wedding 2015

“From first visiting Houghton Lodge and Gardens with my family to enjoy the gorgeous scenery and cakes we knew it would be hard to find a wedding venue as beautiful as this for our outdoor tipi inspired day. We spoke with Sophie, the owner, who is just wonderful and welcoming and as soon as she confirmed the date we wanted was free we knew it was meant to be. Throughout the year leading up to our day Sophie was an email, phone call or short trip away and was incredibly helpful. We discussed our visions with her and she tried extremely hard to help us fulfill our dreams for the day and make it everything we wished for. The grounds are stunning! We had tipi’s along the riverside and to this day we still have guests remarking on how amazing the gardens and scenery are and often say it would be hard to beat! We had our reception at Houghton with welcome drinks and speeches in the walled garden and then a BBQ by the river. It also has a glorious building where you can have your ceremony too. I would highly recommend Houghton Lodge as a wedding venue that will work with so many ideas from formal and sophisticated to chilled and relaxed. Our day was made perfect with our wonderful guests sat on picnic blankets eating delicious food, soaking up the sun, chatting away, walking through the luscious smelling gardens and relaxing to the amazing sounds of the wildlife and flowing water! Do go and visit!” – Katie Wright.

Magical day to remember…

“We visited Houghton Lodge in the July of 2013 after my Parents had been to visit on passing one day… As we walked down the drive I tried to picture what it would be like on the day. Something special about the long drive and beautiful flowers as you approach the house. There is nothing quite like the view from the gate as you look down the long lawn to the river, it was idyllic with a family of swans swimming down, it took our breath away and we instantly knew this was the location for our reception. We were immediately made to feel very welcome by Sophie and her team and over the next few months we were in close contact with regards all the arrangements for the day. She was always quick to reply to any questions, nothing was too much trouble and it made the whole organisation very relaxed. Our wedding day arrived on May 17th 2014, with weather to match our perfect location, guests had the same reaction to the view and location with gasps of wow, when they walked through the gate. The walled gardens created some amazing photos for us to cherish Thank you for helping me create the wedding of my dreams, it was a magical day, I have many wonderful memories. Houghton Lodge will remain a very special place for me and Baz.” – Barry & Rowan.

Superb venue

“We were married at Houghton Lodge in September this year. The location is superb, with peaceful, beautiful gardens leading down to the River Test – very serene. The planning process was really straightforward from start to finish thanks to Sophie’s efficiency, hard work and friendliness (particularly in answering our many, many questions!). We had a drinks reception in the walled garden followed by a marquee wedding next to the river, and Sophie’s help and coordination was invaluable in making the whole process stress free. The venue is also extremely flexible – we really weren’t sure what the weather was going to do on the day and Sophie was very helpful in suggesting excellent wet weather plans. We would highly recommend Houghton Lodge.” – Alice.
