It is a family home that has been described by visitors as ‘a little piece of heaven’ with gardens providing colour and delight throughout the seasons. But what lies behind the doors of the ‘Rural Retreat’ is something that only a few visitors get to find out.
Houghton Lodge & Gardens has organised five house tours for visitors to discover more about the stunning 18th century Cottage Orné which is idyllically set above the River Test.
A Grade II* Historic House and only Hampshire finalist in Country Life’s Magazine and Savills: England’s Finest House Award 2011, the house was built in 1793 and probably intended as a fishing lodge.
Inside the house, the circular Music Room is one of the most beautiful rooms to be seen, with its domed ceiling adorned with trompe l’oeil butterflies and flowers, and the Dining Room is decorated with silk hand-painted wallpaper from China. The exotic birds and exuberant peonies, tell a story of friendship, peace, love and luck.
You will be guided by the owner’s family and learn of the history of this unique Historic House and discover why it is one of the “must see” places of interest in Hampshire.
The tours are taking place on:
- Friday 15th July – 11am
- Tuesday 19th July – 2.30pm
- Friday 22nd July – 11am
- Saturday 1st October – 11am & 2.30pm
“We enjoy showing visitors around the house which is still very much a family home – we have plenty of stories to tell too”
Tickets cost £16.00 per person and include being able to enjoy the gardens after the tour.
