The Apple Rooms
Enjoy a stay in self-catering rooms within the heart of the Test Valley, Hampshire.
What was once a dormant calf byre of one of Hampshire’s most beautiful, privately owned historic houses, Houghton Lodge, is now a bespoke collection of six individually designed boutique en-suite bedrooms called The Apple Rooms, named after apple trees growing in the walled garden orchard. The rooms face west across a grassy meadow, away from the main house and river.
The Apple Rooms provide the perfect base for exploring the many Test Valley attractions and restaurants. They are ideal for romantic getaways, countryside and rural retreats, weekends away visiting friends, fishing or attending a function close by.
In the winter we are able to provide accommodation for shooting parties for up to 10 people with dinner the night before in the Orangery.
Mahogany and oak Georgian furniture has been carefully selected to style the rooms; most pieces are over 300 years old. Where antique furniture has been difficult to source, new pieces have been bought to complement the minimal yet stylish design.
The result is a blissfully serene and idyllic escape in Hampshire. All guests can enjoy complimentary entry to the gardens during their stay (during the opening hours 30th March – 30th Sept) to discover the features of the walled garden, peony walk, long border, topiary peacock garden and the luscious lawns which roll down to the River Test. Guests will also receive a discount for the on-site tearoom, Honesty at Houghton Lodge.
Each bedroom sleeps two adults, with the larger rooms, Barnack Beauty and Cox’s Orange Pippin, having an interconnecting door.
The bathrooms have been designed with your needs in mind, from automatic lighting, smart mirror which does not mist, heated towel rail and underfloor heating, to a bespoke range of toiletries with a unique apple fragrance from the apple orchard.
A basic kitchenette in each room provides a microwave, kettle, toaster and fridge for your convenience but does not have an oven or hob. A breakfast box, fully cooked breakfast or lunch hamper can be delivered to your room with 48 hours’ notice (seasonal exclusions apply). The Boot Inn is within walking distance and there are lots of excellent restaurants in Stockbridge, just a 5 minute car journey away.
The rooms have been equipped with everything we think you could possibly need, from hairdryer and ironing board, to champagne glasses and extra bedding. There will be fresh milk in your fridge on arrival and an emergency supply of tea and coffee to keep you going until you can get to the shops! Also provided is a comprehensive information pack that includes a list of all the excellent pubs, restaurants and shops in the local area.
There is a communal freezer for ice plus a communal BBQ and lawn area outside where there are tables and chairs for enjoying the evening sunshine.
The adjacent tearooms run by Honesty are open from 30 March to 30 September and sell freshly baked artisan bread, sandwiches, salads, panini, hot pies, soup and other seasonal hot dishes for lunch. Their traditional afternoon teas are a popular favourite. Enjoy the peaceful and picturesque setting, with plenty of seating available either in the elegant orangery, cosy tearoom or outside in the beautiful walled garden.
Our bespoke Apple Room toiletries have been produced by Delicate Owl, using sustainably sourced biodegradable and chemical free packaging and ecologically responsible products, handmade using natural ingredients and fragrances derived from plant essential oils, floral waters and floral oils. None of the products have ever been tested on animals!
We are committed to providing suitable access for all our guests, whatever their individual needs and wish to make each and everyone’s stay as enjoyable as possible. Our largest room, Barnack Beauty is accessible to a wheelchair user with an adapted wetroom and the interconnecting door to Cox’s Orange Pippin is ideal for a carer if required. Some of our other rooms are designed with greater contrast between walls and floors for people with visual difficulties to stay comfortably. We can also provide an audio loop for a person with a hearing impairment, which illuminates and vibrates under a pillow in an emergency.
