The Apple Rooms
Enjoy a stay in self-catering rooms within the heart of the Test Valley, Hampshire.
What was once a collection of dormant cow sheds of one of Hampshire’s most beautiful, privately owned historic houses, Houghton Lodge, is now a bespoke collection of six individually designed boutique en-suite bedrooms called The Apple Rooms, named after apple trees growing in the walled garden orchard. (Arthur Turner, Barnack Beauty, Cox’s Orange Pippin, D’Arcy Spice, Egremont Russet and Fearn Pippin)
Taking the influence of the Test Valley and the unique 18th century Cottage Orné architecture of the house, the new rooms are different to anything else on offer in the region; ideal for romantic getaways, fishermen, shooting parties, countryside and rural retreats or weekends away visiting friends or attending a function close by.
The generously proportioned rooms have been decorated and furnished as if you were staying in the historic house, which has been in the Busk family for over 100 years. Mahogany and oak Georgian furniture from the house and from auctions have been carefully selected to style the rooms; most pieces are over 300 years old. Where antique furniture has been difficult to source, new pieces have been bought to complement the minimal yet stylish design.
The result is a blissfully serene and idyllic escape in Hampshire. All guests can enjoy complimentary entry to the gardens during their stay (during the opening hours 1st April – 30th Sept) to discover the features of the walled garden, peony walk, long border, topiary peacock garden and the luscious lawns which roll down to the River Test. Guests will also receive a discount for the on-site tearoom, Honesty at Houghton Lodge.
In the winter we are able to provide accommodation for shooting parties for up to 10 people (staying in the apple rooms) with dinner the night before in the Orangery and a fully cooked breakfast in the house.
Each bedroom sleeps two adults with interconnecting doors between the two largest rooms to cater for bridal parties. A stylish kitchenette in each room provides a microwave, kettle, toaster and fridge for your convenience.
The bathrooms have been designed with your needs in mind, from automatic lighting, smart mirror which does not mist, heated towel rail, underfloor heating and a bespoke range of toiletries with a unique apple fragrance from the apple orchard.
The rooms have been equipped with everything we think you could possibly need, from hair driers, to ironing boards, to champagne glasses and antique furniture. There will be fresh milk in your fridge on arrival and an emergency supply of tea and coffee to keep you going until you can get to the shops!
There is a communal freezer for ice and a lawn area outside where there are tables and chairs for enjoying the evening sunshine.
The adjacent tearooms run by Honesty, sell freshly baked artisan bread, sandwiches, salads, panini, hot pies, soup and other seasonal hot dishes for lunch. Traditional afternoon teas are available. They can also supply breakfast, lunch and supper hampers to your room (April-September).
In each Apple Room you will find a comprehensive information pack that includes microwave recipes, and lists all the excellent pubs, restaurants and shops in the local area.
